25 April – Liberation Day

25 April 2021

Today is a very important day for Italians: 25 April is a national holiday that marks Italy's liberation from Nazi occupation and the fascist regime of World War II.

In 1945, the world had been at war for more than five years and northern Italy was occupied by the German army, allied with the Italian fascists.

They were finally defeated on 25 April 1945, also thanks to the partisans who rose up and made a triumphant entry into the country’s main towns, laying the foundations of a new democracy.

On this day we commemorate all those who fell at war and those who fought against dictatorships because they believed in democracy, in peace, in respect for those who are different, and, above all, in FREEDOM.
