The Storming of the Bastille, known in history as the beginning of the French Revolution, is celebrated every year on 14th July.

The Bastille was a fortress overlooking the city of Paris, built between 1370 and 1382 and mainly used as a prison.

In 1789, after months of poverty, famine and cannons pointed at the city, Parisians rose up in a number of revolts. After violent clashes with the city’s troops, they entered the Bastille and freed all the prisoners.

The Bastille was then demolished, marking the start of the French Revolution.

Now in its place there is a wonderful square, Place de la Bastille.
