Happy German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit)
03 October 2022Today, 3 October, Germany celebrates German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit).
However, many people associate the reunification of Germany with the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989.
So why was that date not chosen for German Unity Day?
The answer lies in bureaucratic processes that took place at the time.
On 23 August 1990, the decision was made to dissolve the German Democratic Republic, and to incorporate all its local authorities into the Federal Republic of Germany, at the earliest date after negotiations ended. That date turned out to be 3 October 1990.
So that is when the reunification of their country is celebrated in towns all over Germany.
Happy German Unity Day to our German friends!
