The Statue of Liberty, created by Frenchman Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi with the help of Gustave Eiffel, has become the modern-day symbol of New York City and the entire United States of America.

Also known as "the Liberty that lights up the world", it is one of the most important and well-known monuments in the world.

 

However, many people are not aware that the Statue of Liberty was in fact a Christmas gift.

On the 25th of December 1885, the French gave the American people this impressive monument as a sign of friendship and to commemorate the declaration of independence signed about a century earlier.

The statue, brought across the Atlantic in several ships and assembled directly on American soil, is considered the most famous and largest Christmas gift in history.

 

In fact, it is so tall that it is visible 40 kilometres away from New York City, which is why the Statue of Liberty has been and still is the thing that all travellers see first.

And seeing it meant for many people that they had finally arrived at a place where they could either start over or shape their dreams.

That is why it is a symbol not only of a nation and its ideal but also of a land where everyone can make their wishes come true and develop their personal skills.
