On 15^th August, India will celebrate its independence achieved after a struggle for freedom that has been described as the least violent in the world.

 

This memory is celebrated with a simulated “peaceful war” between kites competing in an aerial combat to the last string.

 

On this day, families in New Delhi climb onto rooftops or go down into courtyards to participate in the battle with their patang: a typical Indian kite.

 

The game represents new-found freedom and is all about cutting opponents’ long strings while flying one’s own kite for as long as possible.

 

With a sky full of colourful kites, we wish our Indian friends a happy Independence Day!
